Colorful Fonts For Beginners: From Inspiration to Type

Let’s make colorful letters together from start to finish during this fun two-day workshop.

During this weekend workshop (March 1-2) for beginners, you will discover various types of color fonts and learn how to create and export your own type-able characters.

First you will get an overview of what the different color font formats are. After this, you will scour Letterform Archive's Online Archive to find some beautiful letter examples and discover how to turn them into working digital color fonts.

You will learn how to trace and draw a design in Glyphs font editing software, apply special color features and export it into something type-able. To round it off, you will receive a list of tools to equip you to work on your own after this workshop concludes.

Learning Outcomes
  • Basic theory of various color font formats
  • Drawing in font editing software
  • Exporting and testing a color font
  • List of tools to test, preview, and work with your font file
Required Materials
  • Basic vector drawing knowledge for any software (examples: Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Glyphs, Robofont etc.)
  • Glyphs 3 ( trial version is fine)
  • Mac computer/laptop to run Glyphs 3
  • Python3.10+ installed
  • Chrome browser installed

SophiaTypeLove

Sophia (@SophiaTypeLove) draws, designs, and develops font families. She built her background in multi-script typeface design at University of Reading’s MA Typeface Design course where she is now a returning visiting lecturer. Her color fonts work started with a collaboration project that was used to develop the COLRv1 font format at Google Fonts.

As an independent typeface designer, Sophia enjoys working on new creative ideas, collaborations, scripts and helping others get their font families to the finish line. A member of the Alphabettes network and the Fontathon crew.
