Online Core: A History of Writing

Instructor Ewan Clayton will deliver a series of lectures that outline a history of writing from 3500 BCE onward, focusing on the Roman writing system with reference to parallel developments and influences.

Learning Outcomes
  • Familiarity with writing as the ecology of written forms that has always employed multiple materials, technologies, and genres.
  • Critical appreciation of the history of the Roman alphabet as an interrelated and ongoing process.
  • Identify some of the significant forces that drive change in the development of letterforms.
  • Gain a deeper appreciation of how writing and letter design can be understood as an embodied practice that relates to wider cultural concerns and constructs.

Note: This workshop is only open to students enrolled in the Type West Online Postgraduate Certificate Program in Type Design.
