Strap hammer used by Dwiggins for his many projects in wood, which ranged from woodcuts and furniture details, to acrobatic kites and theatrical sets.

This year TypeCon, the annual gathering of The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA), will be held in Boston, the old stomping grounds of our beloved designer William Addison Dwiggins. On Friday, August 25, biographer Bruce Kennett will give a lecture on Dwiggins’s lettering and calligraphy. Later, Letterform Archive will present a pop-up exhibition including many of the unique and rare objects featured in Kennett’s presentation, as well as other Dwiggins work of local and typographic interest. Also on show will be Kennett’s collection of tools and toys handmade by Dwiggins himself.

Archive Curator and Publisher Rob Saunders will join Kennett for an opening reception during TypeCon’s first coffee break of the day. The exhibit is free for all conference attendees.

In a 1914 issue of Boston’s literary journal The Cornhill Booklet, the editors accused George Bernard Shaw of plagiarizing a quotation from Richard Savage in his comedy Misalliance. This cartoon by Dwiggins played a central role in the lampoon.
