Honoring Scott Lindberg
The modernism enthusiast’s collection of mid-20th-century design has a new home at Letterform Archive.
Through his extensive knowledge and keen curator’s eye, Scott Lindberg was a constant source of inspiration to the design community in the Seattle area and beyond.
You may know him as the man behind New Documents (@dcmnts) — an incredible collection of 20th-century album art, book covers, and design artifacts. He was a genuinely kind person and will be missed by many.
Scott’s collection is among the best we’ve ever seen, and we’re honored to be its new home. We’ll carry on his legacy of research and enthusiasm by caring for and making accessible the Scott Lindberg Collection, as well as continuing to show his exhibit, the Shape of Sound, curated with Civilization. We’ll have more news about this soon.
Tributes to Scott
“Scott was a truly great person. He exuded generosity and kindness and had a wealth of design knowledge. His friendship meant so much to us at the studio and we were so lucky to have known him. All our love to his wife Kate and his kids Izzy and Arlo.” — Civilization, Seattle, WA
“Scott was an amazing person. A truly kind and generous soul. His encyclopedic knowledge of the lesser-known mid-century designers was an invaluable resource to all of us. It was his passion to find and capture the fast disappearing artifacts of design culture and to make sure that the names and stories of those individuals were preserved. I learned so much about the wider world of American design through him. Constantly curious, always quick and generous with his time and knowledge. He will be really missed. It is important for those of us who knew him to continue to carry out the work he did and to honor and remember him.” — Alexander Tochilovsky, New York City
“Scott’s creative genius on our Bikestud logo and his keen branding savvy helped put our company on the map in a very bold way, and his shared interest in mid-century design brought great conversation and joy to my life. It has been an honor to know him as a classmate and friend, and a privilege to have him as a creative partner.” — Andrew Tubesing, Saint Paul, MN
“Kind, generous with his time and amazing design collection and knowledge, and funny. Scott Lindberg will be missed.” — John Clifford, New York City
“Scott was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge, and provided so many images for my book [Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design] from his amazing collection.” — Theo Inglis, Norwich, UK
Update, June 2024
Many of the album covers featured in SFMOMA’s Art of Noise exhibition were sourced from the Scott Lindberg Collection. We’re thrilled that Lindberg’s taste and dedication contributed significantly to this blockbuster show, and will continue to serve the public through loans, research visits, and our own exhibitions.
