In this workshop, students automate type design tasks, test out new ideas, and develop their proofing skills while learning about Python programming, OpenType features, and interpolation. Working with Python code inside RoboFont, type designers can systematically engage with their designs, making global changes quickly and reducing time spent on repetitive actions. OpenType features make glyph substitution possible, whether it's to enable small capitals in a finished font or to give a designer access to multiple versions of a glyph as they decide which is the best fit for the typeface. Outline interpolation is a fundamental building block of modern type families, but it can also be a powerful tool for making informed decisions early in the design process. On the first day of the workshop, students will learn about each of these three tools. On the second day, they will use them to work towards a solution to a design challenge they are facing in their original typeface projects.

Note: This workshop is only open to students enrolled in the Type West Certificate Program in Type Design.
