W. A. Dwiggins had strong connections to Hanover, New Hampshire, and so does Bruce Kennett, author of the recently published biography W. A. Dwiggins: A Life in Design.
Dwiggins (1880–1956) was the quintessential maker: best known as a designer of books and printing types, he was also accomplished at calligraphy, illustration, painting, printmaking, sculpture, furniture design, and kite-making. He wrote widely on subjects from graphic arts and publishing to his own ction and fantasy, and was celebrated for his wit. At his home in Hingham, Massachusetts, he built two private marionette theaters; he wrote the plays, designed the sets and lighting, and engineered more than fty marionettes. To this day his techniques are studied in puppetry circles. Come for a glimpse of this loving and creative spirit. Books will be available, along with postcards that showcase Dwiggins’s use of line, shape, and color.
