A large book, beautiful printed, primarily in the underappreciated typeface Behrens Schrift.
Friedrich Hermann Ernst Schneidler, Die altindische Philosophie nach den Grundworten der Upanishads, Jena. Dusseldorf, 1914.
About 300 pp; Hardcover with woodcut printed pattern paper. An edition of 450, this is number 101.
Printed by the Düsseldorf School of Arts and Crafts. The folio edition of the Upanishads of the Veda was another typographical feat of the Jena publishing house, which was produced under the direction of Peter Behrens and designed by Wilhelm Niemeyer. F. H. Ehmcke was in charge of printing, and Behrens Antiqua and Fraktur were used for typesetting. Printed by Poeschel & Trepte, Leipzig, on Zanders laid paper specially made for this edition. With an afterword by Ernst te Peerdt. Along with Ehmcke and Weiß, F. H. Ernst Schneidler is one of the most important book designers for the publisher Eugen Diederichs, whose editions of the first decades of the 20th century were and remain groundbreaking for typography. The pinnacle of his work for Eugen Diederichs was the layout and decoration of this enormous folio work.
