Making the Invisible Visible: Designing with Grids

What does it really mean to use a grid? How do you know if you're using the right grid for the right project? And what principles beyond the grid itself will best engage your intended audience?
Whether you are new to grids or looking for a refresher, this workshop explores how designers build, adapt, and break grids to support visual storytelling, from foundational concepts to advanced considerations such as baseline grids and typographic scaffolding.
We’ll discuss how grid systems function in design, beginning with a brief history before exploring established and alternative approaches, page anatomy, compositional principles, and typographic hierarchy. Working in Adobe InDesign, you’ll build flexible grid systems and make the most of the software’s layout capabilities. Through guided exercises and projects, you’ll explore how structured layouts can also be expressive. This is a workshop where theory intersects with practice through experimentation, iteration, and learning from mistakes as part of the design process.
This two-week workshop includes two group Zoom sessions and an individual check-in with the instructor in between.

Maurizio Masi
Maurizio Masi has more than twenty-five years of experience in publication design, branding, and marketing. During his time at Hoefler&Co., he designed type specimens and campaigns that showcased new releases as real-world proofs of concept. At Hearst Magazines, he specialized in redesigning publications, working with grid systems, composition, typography, and narrative visual language through the art direction of photography and illustration.
Currently a faculty member at Lehigh University, Maurizio has also taught in the City University of New York system, working with students from diverse backgrounds. His approach to teaching bridges theory and practice through craft, critical thinking, and digital rigor.
Outside the studio or classroom, you’ll likely find him in the kitchen teaching his kids how to make Pasta Fresca, or meticulously edging S-shaped garden beds.
