The Basics of Designing Flourishes
with Lynne Yun
Good flourishing is not the result of “happy accidents.” Flourishing is most effectively employed in a systematic way that doesn't rely on spontaneity. In this two day workshop, Lynne will go over the basic rules and principles of designing the flourished line.
During this two-day online workshop (Wednesday, September 28, and Thursday, September 29), participants will examine high quality flourished work, learn how to identify basic elements of well-executed flourishes, dissect what makes good flourishing pleasing to the eye, and combine the elements to create their own designs. Additionally, the workshop will explore methods of combining flourishes in a visually pleasing way, with particular emphasis on white space and hot spot control, scale, intersecting angles, smoothness, and rhythm.
- Identify basic elements of well-executed flourishes
- Dissect what makes good flourishing pleasing to the eye
- Combine flourishing elements to create your own designs
- Grid paper
- Tracing paper
- Layout bond paper (Borden & Riley #37, Canson Marker Layout, or Bienfang Graphics 360)
- Pencil and sharpener or mechanical pencil with refills
- Tape (artist’s or masking)
- 1-2mm chisel tip marker or pen (e.g., Sakura Pigma calligraphy markers, Zig calligraphy chisel tip markers, chisel tip fountain pen, etc)

Lynne Yun is an NYC-based type designer and educator who specializes in typography, hand lettering, and calligraphy. She is a partner at Space Type, a Brooklyn based type studio that operates at the intersection of type, design, and technology. Lynne was previously a full time type designer at Monotype, and served on the board of AIGA NY and Society of Scribes. Prior to working at Monotype, Lynne held positions as a graphic designer at Apple Inc., Publicis, and Deutsch.
Lynne holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts, a postgraduate certificate in typeface design from the Type@Cooper Extended Program. In pursuit of technology in relation to letterforms, she attended the School for Poetic Computation residency program and obtained a Masters degree from ITP at New York University. Her work has been recognized by organizations such as AIGA, Type Directors Club and the Art Directors Club.
