The 1971 Photo-Lettering One-Line Manual of Style was a compendium used by designers to select and specify display lettering for paste-up. Among the more than two hundred letterers and calligraphers commissioned to design letterforms for Photo-Lettering, Inc (aka “PLINC”) were ten women. With the exception of Jeanyee Wong and Daisy Alcock, these women and their work are not well known. This presentation will explore recent findings from ongoing research by Anne Galperin, focusing primarily on Betti Haft, a New York-based designer whose work for pharmaceutical advertising, as well as cultural and educational institutions, describes the graphic design profession of her era.
Letterform Lectures are a public aspect of the Type West postgraduate program. The series is co-presented by the San Francisco Public Library, where events are free and open to all.
