An Update on Our New Home

Thanks to you, our new space is taking shape. Here’s a peek at what we’re building together.

In July, we announced the surprising — but ultimately opportune — news that Letterform Archive needs a new home. We asked for your help, and you delivered. Over 300 donors from at least 15 countries supported our move campaign. With matching pledges from Emigre and an anonymous donor, we crossed the midway mark of our $200,000 goal.

Your support enabled us to secure a long-term lease, rezone the site as an arts location (a process that took six weeks), complete all the city’s permitting requirements, and begin customizing the space to meet the needs of a growing Archive. Here’s what’s done and what’s left to do:

Build-out Construction Checklist
  • demolition
  • insulation
  • plumbing
  • electrical
  • wall framing
  • interior planning
  • selection of finishes and fixtures
  • climate control system
  • sheetrock, tape, mud, and paint
  • flooring
  • installation of finishes and fixtures
  • shelving for stacks, reading room, and shop
  • gallery furniture
  • reading room display and donor wall

We’re excited to be working with our friends Angie Wang and Mark Fox of Design is Play who are consulting on interiors and graphics. The list gives you a sense of where we are, but why tell you about it when it’s so much better to show you? Today, we’re thrilled to share our current vision of the Letterform Archive floor plan. This is a visual representation of what we’re building together, along with some notes about how this new space will improve the way we store and share the collection, as well as enhance your Archive experience.

We believe this space — in addition to the accessibility of the location itself — is exactly what’s needed at this chapter in our story. We’re over halfway there. Your help today will take us to the finish line and open a new Letterform Archive worthy of the material it holds and the community it serves.
