Explore and interact with a curated selection of books, periodicals, posters, sketches, original art, and related ephemera that chronicle the history of written communications. From the invention of writing and medieval manuscripts to the advent of print and the proliferation of digital type, our collection illuminates humankind’s ongoing engagement with written expression. Please note that the tour focus will vary according to the expertise of the host.

Laura Serra
Laura Serra (she/her) is an illustrator, letterer, and graphic designer. Born in Germany with Sardinian roots, she grew up speaking multiple languages. Living in Oakland since 2017, Laura works in portraiture, calligraphic mandalas, and a wide variety of illustrations for clients like AARP, Leo Burnett, GRAY, Salvation Army, Frankfurter Allgemeine, and Letterform Archive where she’s had the honor of drawing each member of the team. As an Archive volunteer, she assists with Italian, French, and German translation, and researches specific collections, such as the German Notgeld.
