Season’s Greetings: Charming Holiday Cards from Paul Rand

$25.00

MSRP:

Twenty-four whimsical holiday cards featuring hand-drawn Santas from an American design titan

Legendary designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) is perhaps best known for his minimalist logos for companies such as IBM, UPS, and ABC. But he had a more whimsical side, as demonstrated in this collection of homemade Christmas cards. Some expressively painted, some collaged onto artboard, and others printed with die-cuts and folds, these creations show Santa cheerfully taking a snowball to the face, letting carolers read music off his beard, and lighting up like a Christmas tree in an X-ray booth—all in Rand’s playful yet iconic style. Reproduced in print for the first time, each of the dozen notecards appears twice, printed on textured paper and presented with envelopes in a keepsake box.

About Paul Rand

Born in 1914 in Brooklyn, Paul Rand is one of the most influential designers of the twentieth century. A legend in advertising design, he started his career as a magazine designer, where he adapted modernism’s asymmetry and graphic typography to the editorial page, before making his mark on the corporate identities of the world’s most well-known brands. For nearly 25 years, Rand taught as a professor of graphic design at Yale University. He also illustrated several children’s books and authored the significant commentary, Thoughts on Design (1970). With a crisp and witty style that prioritized functionality over form, Rand distilled the twentieth century’s complexity into streamlined modernist designs that still read as iconic today.
