Letterform Archive is honored to participate in Between Heritage and Modernity, a series of seminars dedicated to Arabic type design and typography, curated by Dr. Nadine Chahine.
The theme of the series revolves around concepts of modernity in Arabic type design, the heritage of Arabic letterforms in the context of current technologies, contemporary Arabic branding design, and the history of Arab graphic design. The series brings together renowned designers working with Arabic type, both from the U.S. and the Middle East.
For the final panel discussion on March 19, Technology and Heritage, Letterform Archive’s Editorial Director and Associate Curator Stephen Coles will present highlights from the Archive’s growing collection of global writing systems, including manuscripts, type specimens, and other typographic artifacts. Arabic examples will include commentary from experts Dr. Nadine Chahine and Dr. Mamoun Sakkal.
Dr. Sakkal will also participate in this session with a lecture on Calligraphy, Type, Image: A Journey into Arabic Script and Erich Scheichelbauer, of the font editing software Glyphs, will join Dir. Chahine to present Technology and the Arabic Script.

Stephen “Stewf” Coles, Letterform Archive’s Associate Curator & Editorial Director, joined the staff after serving on our Board of Directors since its inception. Born in Salt Lake City, he moved to San Francisco in 2004 to serve as FontShop’s creative director. He later worked as an independent consultant, connecting font makers with font users, and wrote the book The Anatomy of Type. With his background in design and journalism, combined with an obsession for type history, Stephen is responsible for the online face and voice of the Archive, and helps to shape the future of the collection. He continues to publish the influential websites Typographica and Fonts In Use.
Dr. Nadine Chahine is an award-winning Lebanese type designer and principal at ArabicType Ltd. She has an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, and a PhD from Leiden University, The Netherlands. She has numerous awards including two Awards for Excellence in Type Design from the Type Directors Club in New York in 2008 and 2011. Her typefaces include: Frutiger Arabic, Neue Helvetica Arabic, Univers Next Arabic, Palatino Arabic, and Koufiya. Nadine's work has been featured in the 5th edition of Meggs’s History of Graphic Design and in 2012 she was selected by Fast Company as one of its 100 Most Creative People in Business. In 2016 her work was showcased in the 4th edition of First Choice which highlights the work of the 250 top global designers. In 2017, Nadine was selected by Creative Review to their Creative Leaders 50.
